About this book

Turning the pages of this book, photo after photo, is like opening windows to the spirit of the earth, and we find the magic and timeless – all that we are and have been. We introduce here an invitation to lights and shadows, using raw materials, alphabets, catechism, to educate in ethics and aesthetics outside the realm of consumerist domestication. These pictures are like windows, and there is no need for texts. They open the stage of rural Galicia, that land's-end full of mystery and nostalgia.

Fisterras that from the East of dawn move their fore to the West of dusk and celebrate the sun, Venus, coming out from her shell, coming to life.

With the collection Galicia, terra, mar e xentes, the author introduces Galicia on a day to day basis, far away from photo albums and postcards of monuments. This book is for those who love to travel to the depths of a culture.

Book fragment

Fraga do Eume (Path by a stream)

A mysterious forest full of endogenous flora and fauna! Though this is not the last Atlantic forest, it is the one closest: the future is in our hands!

Mythic land (Castro)

It is said that on those hills lived the first human beings of our land, they built their houses there with stones and they baked their bread with acorns... A bag-pipe fills the valleys and the mountains.

Places and villages (Romeor)

One thousand years later, by the rivers, on the plains, the places and villages of our grandmothers and fathers were born... This is our origin, the roots of Galicians!

Blood from the earth (old vineyard)

Wine is linked to our culture and its production is an important part of our economy. Even in some villages our grandparents still make their own wine and spirits. For better or worse, we can blame it on the Romans!

Decadence (Hórreo)

After 200 years of glory in the rural world, most hórreos (barns) are almost retired. Before the corn cobs, potatoes were kept here and the chourizos and ham were cured. Today many are used to dry clothes and store junk... even as a shelter for cats and dogs!
