Soy un caballo
By Gonzalo Moure, Esperanza León
About this book
Through a poetic and tender story, Gonzalo Moure invites readers to inhabit the soul and feelings of a horse, to experience what it feels like to see oneself through the eyes of others, to understand how humans are seen by other beings whom we dominate, sometimes violently.
In total harmony with the text, the illustrations of Esperanza León convey that dialogue between thoughts and materials, and between past and present. She gets inspiration from rock art, and her brushes mix pigments and colours; the sand that evokes a golden temple, blue of dreams and grey of ashes.
This is a “horse-centred” book, not a “human-centred” book, as the author defines it. It is a book that may be a lesson in humility, a love story in which the horse teaches us generosity, tolerance and understanding. He assumes that the languages of humans and horses are different, but he has learnt to interpret the will of people through their expressions and movements. In exchange, he demands the same from us -- that we learnt to see the value in his gestures, sniffing and whinnies because communication is more than words.
The key is in taking the point of view of the horse, not as an object for our enjoyment of physical work but as an example of dignity, harmony and respect for nature.
Book fragment
Many days a girl comes to see me. She also rides me. I am afraid of humans, when I see them my head tells me to run away. But the girl does not frighten me. I know she does not mean to hurt me, I know that she loves me the same as I learnt to love her.
