Why do we need to eat?
The functions of our body use up energy. Whenever we eat, jump, digest food, even sleep, we use energy. Energy is necessary to be alive, both if we are resting or moving (when we sleep our heart is beating, the lungs are moving, etc).
In the case of children and adolescents, the body grows and needs materials to make larger structures. Even adults need to replace the materials that their bodies use throughout the years.
We can compare this with the production process of a car: we need to place some materials to manufacture it, fuel for it to move, even to start the engine, even if it is not moving, to replace the parts that are worn out…
