About this book

Who said that poetry could not be funny and accessible to children? With the illustrated recreation of this story as a poem, we try to foster the creativity and imagination of young readers and reinforce their Galician identity.

This is an illustrated poem that tells the story of a Galician sailor, captain Peneque, who, after sailing the seas and living thousands of adventures in the most dangerous seas on the planet, manages to defeat evil pirate Metepata and free all ships from fear .

The book is included in the children's collection Xiz de cor.

Book fragment

To the sea of dolphins
a ship sailed;
aft says farewell,
fore says here I come.

Flannel sails,
cotton rudder,
alabaster mast
cardboard oars.

The captain was
old Peneque
of yellow beard
pipe and cutlass near

He sailed the seas
of blue and storm
he broke the waves
with great decision.

But in the reef
cotton rocks he found
the wind blows
and the ship went aground.

–Heaven help!
–a voice shouted–
A pirate ship
approaches the helm.

–All stand still!
–captain's orders–,
if they are so brave...
let them come at their will!

With a face of scorn,
Pirate Metepata
lifted his sword
the blade as wide as a platter.

–Surrender!
–he shouted–
I am Pirate Metepata
and my heart is not tender!

–Relax, Metepata,
you don't intimidate us with your chatter
as we are Galicians
and therefore brave and strong!

-Forget the story, old man!
Bring the gold and the silver
don't you see I am feared
forceful Metepata?

Captain Peneque
-coming from Galicia-
looked at him up and down
his eyes a sea so rough.

Pirate Metepata
escaped at top speed
wind on the sails
Forever he was going to leave.

And the dolphins arrived
by the thousand in procession
they removed the ship from the rocks
and saved them all without concession.

And old Peneque
came back to his land to take rest
and told me this story
so that I can tell you about his quest.
