Esta historia
By Xosé Monteagudo
About this book
Telling a story is something that needs the charm and delight of a discovery, like the revelation of a secret life.
The unexpected stems from the daily, it conquers us and becomes unforgettable...
It is the power of literature. Xosé Monteagudo (Moraña, 1965) is the author of the novel As voces da noticia (Premio Blanco Amor 2002), and in this new book he introduces us to a mysterious and fascinating character. Through a conversation between two friends, he speaks of university years and the loss of innocence, of youth and family life. The novel travels back and forth through the cloth of existence. Reading Esta historia is living it over again.
Book fragment
What has become of him? This is the question I never stopped asking for years, the question I asked since I left university, every time I remembered Charli Gómez. Where could he be? What has become of his life? The questions triggered my curiosity and made me imagine anything but an orderly and conventional existence, as mine had become or what any other people I was still in contact with had. From all I knew of him while we were studying in Santiago, I knew that Charli had never had the same concerns that motivated the rest of us, so in a coherent exercise of imaginative logic, amongst other things, I imagined him as a bohemian and minority artist leading the fight for some selfless cause and working in some remote country in the so-called Third World.
