About this book

Kalandraka presents an adaptation of a traditional tale for first readers. This is a story written in rhyme with a cumulative and chained structure, with rhythm based on the repetition of a stanza.

The hen has to go to several characters to seek help to save her chick. All of them must give an element that is crucial for each to perform its function: the cloud gives water that feeds the plot that produces grass that feeds the goat that provides leather to the shoe-maker who makes the shoes of the owner of the hazel grove where the hen and the chick are living.

Once upon a time there was a tiny chick that was eating with her mother hen under a hazel tree. Suddenly she choked on a hazelnut and almost died. So mother hen ran to the owner’s house:

  • Ma, ma, please come to the hazel grove to take the hazelnut out of my chick’s throat. Please don’t delay or she will suffocate.
