Regardless of natural likes or preferences, we must acknowledge that the authors included represent the most important philosophical movements of all conventional historic times: the Ancient times (Thales, Plato and Aristotle), the Middle Ages (Agustin of Hipona and Thomas of Aquino), Modern times (Descartes, Spinoza, Kant and Hegel) and contemporary times (Nietzsche, Heidegger and Wittgenstein). Philosophy is not at all something involving some twelve mad men who speak a language only they understand […], it is something crucial for understanding the world and, in particular, for understanding human behaviour. According to this, in the twelve paradigms included here, the main point is not the presentation of pure ideas but, to the greatest extent possible, the search for a justification for these ideas in the concrete life of that philosopher. Here we can use that ancient motto “primum vivere, deinde philosophare” (“life first, philosophy next”).
