Dedre
By Ramón Caride
About this book
The stories in “Dedre” , Ramón Caride’s latest book do not need much complex explanation: the first one, entitled “Practical reason” is a police story; the rewriting of the feats of “Pepe Carrera in two times” presents a character in his own right, a witness to a time of rejection, a time that is the basis for our own times and our misery. In “Snuff-movie” and “Donald Fuck” there is a constant reference to mass culture or an absence of it, and to the cinema, with clear homage to Milo Manara, Rubem Fonseca, Ridley Scott and other reference points for his generation. In this first part there is an emphasis on realism, on violence and darkness; in the second part, entitled “Of impure reason”, some recent short stories by Ramón Caride delve into humour and self-criticism to convey, through amazing literary pyrotechnics, the ironic and corrosive point of view of the author of our literary system, in such works as "Writing Workshop" and Put the Blame on Max Weber."

1979. Seven days in autumn
In the circles of impotence. Impotence for having to keep quiet, or keeping quiet because keeping quiet is easier than screaming the truth at the top of one’s lungs: in those circles Pepe Carrera drowns, trapped in his whirlpool of shadows. Indecisive, without being able to take the receiver and tell the judge all he knows and supposes. He may never do it. His hands tremble, he is sweating profusely. And when he finally dials the number, in a burst of determination, there is a reply on the other side of the line but he cannot bring himself to utter a word.
– Hello! Yes! Who is it? –The mouth of Pepe is dry, his tongue is sealed to his palate, he wants to reply and fear strains his throat. On the other side, the listener gets fed up with waiting for a reply and hangs up. A bitter peep pierces the ears of a terrified man, who realises that he has lost his last chance. And then the last six fatal days cross his mind; heartless and anguishing days in a row becoming an unstoppable waterfall, a surge without return, since that black day Antón was found dead in the stream of Dedre with the first light of day.
